Upon his return to Pristina, after participating in the session in the UN Security Council on the situation in the northern part of Kosovo, EULEX Head of Mission, Yves de Kermabon, stated the following:
“Following the recent incidents the situation in the northern part of Kosovo is now calm and quiet. Kosovo Police is in charge of law and order in the area, monitored, mentored and advised by EULEX. EULEX, in cooperation with the Police, is strongly determined to find and bring to justice the perpetrator/s of the tragic and fatal incident on 2 July as well as the shooting incident on 5 July. There has been no agreement related to deploying Special Police Units in this area, and we continue to work with all stakeholders towards the establishment and training of a multi ethnic Special Police Unit. It’s important that all involved parties refrain from any activities that could potentially be seen as provocations.
Furthermore, as EULEX has stated on numerous occasions, there is an urgent need to restore the full functionality of the Mitrovica District Court, and the best way forward is to find solutions in coordination with all relevant stakeholders. I am not prepared to state a specific date when this will happen, but I urge all involved parties to work towards finding a pragmatic solution as soon possible.”
