Justice and Protection for All - EULEX Marks the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia

17 May 2019

To mark the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOT), EULEX will fly the Rainbow Flag at its headquarters to reaffirm the EU's commitment to protect the human rights of all persons, regardless of their gender identity or sexual orientation.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex persons’ fundamental right to non-discrimination needs to be a part of our mind-set; combating discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation and gender identity is a fundamental element of reinforcing the rule of law in Kosovo and, as such, it is everyone’s responsibility.

EULEX encourages the Kosovo authorities to promote equality and non-discrimination so LGBTI persons in Kosovo can fully enjoy their human rights.

“The principle of non-discrimination is fundamental for our Mission in Kosovo. LGBTI rights are human rights that transcend borders: everyone has the right to be who they want to be regardless of their background, gender identity or sexual orientation. Openness, tolerance and inclusion are core European beliefs”, stated the Head of Mission, Alexandra Papadopoulou.

EULEX acknowledges the positive developments already achieved in Kosovo and the strong efforts of the civil society organisations and human rights activists in tackling this important matter.

As this year’s theme “Justice and Protection for All” underlines, the Mission will speak up to continue the collective journey towards societies that ensure justice and protection for all. Jointly we must strive for fair and just societies where no one is left behind.

To mark this occasion, the High Representative Federica Mogherini on behalf of the EU also stated that the EU strongly reaffirms that discrimination against LGBTI persons undermines the most basic human rights principles enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

“The EU, hand in hand with its Member States, will continue supporting the essential work of these advocates and will not stop until all LGBTI persons can live freely and safely”, added the High Representative, Federica Mogherini.
